A Chinese man from Sibu was scammed out of 4,456 ringgit in savings after being misled into believing that watching TikTok videos would earn him commissions.
The 52-year-old victim received a message via WhatsApp around 7:30 PM on the 25th of last month from a stranger, inviting him to join an online part-time job. The victim, believing it to be true, agreed to join this so-called "easy money" part-time job.
He was then added to a Telegram group named "Tiktok." After the organizer provided a detailed explanation, the victim agreed to participate by pre-paying for product costs. The scammer promised that he would earn a 10% commission on sales once the products were sold.
The victim subsequently received several TikTok video links and followed the instructions, making online transfers to start the part-time process.
In just four days, from March 26 to March 29, he made five transfers to several specified foreign bank accounts. However, he only received a 108 ringgit commission, far below the promised 10%. As the scammer kept asking for more funds, the victim became suspicious and eventually decided to report the incident to the police.
