Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage took centre stage during Sarawak Week at the Malaysia Pavilion in the Osaka Expo 2025, captivating thousands of visitors with two cultural gems — the intricate burie weaving tradition and the soulful melodies of the sape.
🇲🇾 The Malaysia Pavilion, part of the spectacular Osaka Expo featuring 150 international pavilions, attracts an average of 15,000 visitors daily. The Expo runs from April 13 – October 13, 2025, celebrating culture, innovation, and global unity.
🧵 From August 4–10, master artisans Wong Yau Nyau and Durie Likong from Kapit wowed audiences with live demonstrations of burie weaving — a craft rooted in Iban folklore. Legend tells of the supernatural hero Bunsu Remaung, who would carefully arrange his burie costume before entering his home. Over generations, the selampai burie became a symbol of pride and tradition in Iban ceremonial attire.
🎼 Meanwhile, accomplished sape musicians Danison Manium and Elizabeth Bungan Peter from Persatuan Anak Seni Sarawak filled the pavilion with the hauntingly beautiful sounds of the sape, the iconic “boat lute” of Borneo — a centrepiece of Orang Ulu culture used in rituals, storytelling, and celebrations.
🌏 By bringing these traditions to an international stage, Sarawak not only showcased its artistic legacy but also deepened cross-cultural appreciation.
