Sarawak’s Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, has proposed the establishment of a War Museum — a place to safeguard historical materials from the Second World War, the communist insurgency, and the Indonesian Confrontation.
📜 The museum will not only preserve books, photographs, journals, uniforms, and documents but also honour the sacrifices of both local and foreign veterans who fought for freedom. It will serve as an invaluable resource for the younger generation to understand Sarawak’s history.
During a courtesy call at the Astana Negeri Sarawak (Sept 9), Wan Junaidi received the delegation of the late General Sir Thomas Eastick, led by his grandson Michael Eastick, who presented the original 1945 Japanese Surrender document. This historic piece marked the end of Japanese occupation in Borneo on Sept 11, 1945.
✨ Sir Thomas Eastick, commander of the Kuching Force, accepted the Japanese surrender 80 years ago before becoming Military Governor of Kuching.
The Governor expressed gratitude for this historic handover, saying it further enriches Sarawak’s heritage and strengthens the records that will inspire and educate future generations.
💐 Wan Junaidi and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, also viewed old medals and British-era Sarawak flags on display, alongside delegates from Australia, the UK, and Germany—descendants of war veterans who once fought side by side with Sarawakians.
Among those present were Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak Museum Director Nancy Jolhi, and other officials.
