Every October, Malaysia and the world observe Pink October, a global movement raising awareness about breast cancer since 1985. Itβs a reminder of the importance of early detection, timely treatment, and strong community support.
π According to Malaysiaβs National Cancer Registry Report (2017β2021), breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women.
Cases increase significantly after age 40, with the highest rates among women aged 55β74.
Alarmingly, over 50% of cases are still diagnosed at late stages (Stage 3 & 4), when treatment is more complex and survival rates are lower.
π©ββοΈ In a special interview with the Sarawak Tribune, Dr Adibah Ali, General, Breast & Endocrine Surgeon at Timberland Medical Centre, shared key insights:
β
Early detection at Stage 0β1 can lead to 90%+ survival rates.
β
Screening methods include monthly self-exams, clinical checks, and mammograms (recommended for women 40+).
β
Lifestyle choices matter: exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, eat a balanced diet, avoid smoking & alcohol, and breastfeed if possible.
β
Latest treatments now include 3D mammograms, VABB biopsy, advanced surgery, chemotherapy, hormone & targeted therapy.
π Beyond medical care, emotional support from families and communities plays a vital role. In Sarawak, NGOs like SCAN, Pink Ribbon Group, and SBCSG actively support patients and raise awareness.
β¨ This October, letβs remember:
Breast cancer awareness is not just for one monthβitβs a year-round responsibility. Together, we can save lives through knowledge, early action, and compassion.
