Kuching is set to become the first city in Borneo to install smart poles equipped with real-time air quality sensors, announced Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
📍 The pilot project will begin with two locations — Kuching Park and Palmarium Park, allowing both the public and authorities to monitor live air quality data anytime.
🗣️ “With real-time air quality data, we can better safeguard public health,” said Mayor Wee during the World Environmental Health Day 2025 celebration at MBKS headquarters.
💨 This year’s theme — “Clean Air, Healthy People” — reminds us that air pollution is a silent but preventable threat. Together, government and community action can make a difference.
Mayor Wee also reaffirmed MBKS’s green commitments:
♻️ Strengthening waste management & recycling
🚫 Reducing single-use plastics
🥤 Being the first council in Sarawak to ban plastic straws
🛍️ Introducing biodegradable bags (but encouraging reusable ones!)
🏞️ He added that Kuching’s leisure parks will continue to be upgraded — “Parks are not just for jogging, they are spaces that give soul to our city.”
🐾 On public health, MBKS has expanded its rabies awareness campaigns from 2 to 5 per year, reminding pet owners to act responsibly.
The event also featured exhibitions by NREB, Sarawak River Board, Swinburne University Sarawak, Trienekens, and more, highlighting collaborative efforts for a healthier Kuching.
💚 When our air is clean, our people are healthy. When our people are healthy, our city will prosper.
