Sarawak has become the first state in Malaysia — and in the region — to offer free tertiary education to its citizens under the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), with no quota imposed.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the scheme is open to all eligible Sarawakians, regardless of social or economic background, as long as they meet university entry requirements.
“There is no quota for FTES. As long as you qualify for the identified courses in Sarawak-owned universities and you truly want to learn, the government will support you,” he said at the FTES launch held at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre.
📚 Who is eligible?
The scheme covers students who have passed recognised examinations, including:
✅ SPM (with a credit in Bahasa Malaysia)
✅ UEC graduates from Chinese independent schools, provided they meet entry requirements
“Why do we recognise UEC? As long as it is recognised by reputable universities and you have a Bahasa Malaysia credit, we provide free tertiary education,” Abang Johari explained.
🌍 He added that this initiative places Sarawak alongside countries such as Germany, which practise free tertiary education — reflecting the State Government’s strong commitment to human capital development.
“We are blessed with natural resources, but without human capital, we cannot add value. Knowledge is the key as we transition towards a more modern and advanced economy,” he said.
🔧 Currently, 64 courses are offered under FTES, with more programmes to be introduced in the future to meet the needs of Sarawak’s growing knowledge-based economy.
The launch was attended by several distinguished leaders, including Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, along with senior ministers and state officials.
✨ Education for all. Opportunity for every Sarawakian. A bold step towards the future.
