The RM248 million New Bebuling Airport project in Betong Division is on track for completion by February 2026, marking a major milestone in Sarawakβs rural infrastructure development ποΈβ¨
Designed as a Short Take-Off and Landing Port (STOLport) π«, the airport will serve both passenger travel and cargo operations π¦π₯, improving connectivity for communities in Spaoh and surrounding areas π€π
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas stated that the airport will play a vital role in strengthening the rural economic chain πΌπΎ by enabling local produce and goods to reach wider markets πβ‘οΈπ. During a recent site visit π·ββοΈπ, he emphasised that the project goes beyond connectivity β it is about creating new opportunities for agro-based industries and tourism π±ποΈ
βThe airport will play two main roles β passenger and cargo transport β allowing products from Spaoh to reach markets beyond the area, thus strengthening the rural economic chain,β he said π£οΈ
The development includes a main terminal building π’, extensive earthworks π§, pavement works, and supporting public infrastructure π οΈ. Once operational, the airport will complement initiatives such as the Collection, Packaging and Processing Centre (CPPC) π¦π and the Agropark πΏ, boosting agricultural productivity and value-added processing π
Officials also noted that the airport could serve as a key gateway for ecotourism πβοΈ in Betong Division, making it easier for visitors to explore the regionβs natural attractions ποΈπΈ and helping diversify the local economy beyond agriculture π
In addition to the airport, Uggah was briefed on several ongoing infrastructure projects in Betong, including:
πΉ Sungai Krian Bridge (Coastal Package D4) π
πΉ Highway to Roban Intersection (Coastal Package A5) π£οΈ
πΉ Batang Saribas Bridge No. 2 (Coastal Package A4) π
πΉ Sungai Paku Bridge π
πΉ Rural road upgrades along Jambu KrampakβRantau Layan and IjokβBatu PesokβRantau Layan ππ€οΈ
The visit was attended by Betong MP Datoβ Dr Richard Rapu, Sarawak JKR Director Datu Dr Cassidy Morris, and senior officers from relevant agencies π₯π€, reflecting the governmentβs commitment to timely delivery and community-focused development β±οΈπͺ
As part of Sarawakβs broader strategy to enhance rural connectivity πΊοΈ, the New Bebuling Airport is expected to become a cornerstone of Betongβs development β delivering long-term economic and social benefits for local residents π±ποΈβ¨
