Over 200 contingents and decorated floats filled the streets with colour, culture, and festive cheer during the Kuching Teochew Association’s Xuan Tian Shang Di Parade on Thursday night. 🎉🛕
Crowds of locals and visitors lined the parade route early, capturing the vibrant spectacle on their phones and cameras. 📸✨
The parade started at Hiang Tiang Shang Ti Temple along Carpenter Street and made its way through Ewe Hai Street, Wayang Street, Jalan Tabuan, Jalan Back Hock, Jalan Central, Jalan Padungan, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Main Bazaar, Gambier Street, Khoo Hun Yeang Street, before concluding at Padang Merdeka and returning to the temple. 🏮🎊
Beyond its religious significance, the parade is a key annual event for the Teochew community and is now listed on the Sarawak Tourism Calendar as a must-see cultural highlight. 🌏❤️
Officiating the event, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said:
“The Xuan Tian Shang Di Parade is not just a religious celebration—it’s a colourful event that brings people together, celebrates cultural heritage, and fosters community unity.”
The parade is seen as having the potential to grow in popularity nationally and internationally, much like the Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple procession. 🌟
✨ What’s next?
The Kuching Teochew Association will host a ‘Fu Yuan Shan Qing’ bidding dinner at Lau Ya Keng Foodcourt, Carpenter Street on Friday, Jan 23. Devotees can bid for offerings to the deity and pray for blessings. 🙏
