Miri Launches Citywide Festive Cleaning Programme Ahead of Chinese New Year

In preparation for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations 🧧, the Miri City Council (MCC) has rolled out a citywide festive cleaning programme to manage the expected increase in household and bulky waste.
📅 Programme period: 2 – 15 February
🗑️ 44 large roll-on, roll-off bins will be placed at 46 strategic locations across residential areas throughout the city.
This initiative aims to:
✅ Make waste disposal easier during festive spring cleaning
✅ Prevent illegal dumping
✅ Protect public health and the environment
👤 Speaking at the council meeting on Monday (Jan 26), Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said the council is taking a proactive approach to ensure cleanliness and environmental protection during one of the busiest festive periods of the year.
📍 Bin locations include:
Taman Tunku, Lambir, Luak, Jalan Luak Bakam, Jalan Riam Lopeng, Krokop, Piasau, Pujut, Piasau Utara, Tudan, Desa Senadin, Permyjaya, Desa Murni, Vista Perdana, Lutong, Kuala Baram and more.
The temporary bins are especially meant for bulky items often discarded during festive clean-ups. Residents are strongly encouraged to use these facilities responsibly.
⚠️ Reminder:
Illegal dumping remains a serious offence. Improper waste disposal can:
❌ Block drains
❌ Increase flood risks
❌ Create breeding grounds for mosquitoes and disease-carrying pests
🚫 Dumping rubbish along roadsides, drains, road reserves and open spaces is strictly prohibited. Enforcement action may be taken under existing by-laws.
♻️ For bulky waste that cannot fit into the temporary bins, residents are advised to dispose of it directly at the Kuala Baram Landfill, in accordance with operating hours and disposal guidelines.
🤝 The council stresses that a clean city during the festive season is a shared responsibility. Public cooperation is key to making this programme a success.
