Since its launch in September 2025, the SMC Cares App has officially crossed 30,000 registered users, with hundreds more signing up every single day. 💪
According to Sibu Municipal Council engineer Tony Wong, this number is expected to soar past 100,000 users once the On-Street Smart Parking System is fully rolled out.
At the moment, Sibu is still in a transition period, where both the Smart Parking system and physical parking coupons are accepted. This phase is expected to end by June, after which Smart Parking will be the only system in use.
👵👴 What about senior citizens?
Tony Wong acknowledged that some elderly users may be less familiar with mobile apps, but emphasized that this challenge is not unique to Sibu — it’s part of a global shift towards digitalisation, aligned with national policies.
In fact, many government services, including the Immigration Department, have already gone cashless.
The good news? ✅
The SMC Cares App allows family members or caregivers to help seniors pay for parking or even extend parking time remotely, making it more convenient for everyone.
💡 Better efficiency, better revenue
Since migrating data from the old system, registered users now receive direct notifications for outstanding fines and penalty notices. Monitoring over the past few weeks shows a significant increase in fine collection, a positive step towards strengthening council revenue.
🌆 Towards a Smart City
Smart parking is just one of SMC’s initiatives on the journey to becoming a Smart City, supported by continuous public awareness and education efforts.
Change may take time — but adapting together ensures no one is left behind. 💙
