Tucked away along a narrow lane from India Street 🏘️ — or accessible via its main entrance on Gambier Road — stands one of Kuching’s most treasured landmarks: Masjid Bandar Kuching, also known as Masjid India.
📜Built in 1876 on the site of an old wooden surau (prayer room), it is the oldest intact mosque in Sarawak 🌿, carrying with it over a century of history, faith, and community spirit 🤝.
In the early 20th century, prominent members of the Indian Muslim community constructed the surrounding shophouses 🏬 and generously donated them to the mosque as a source of revenue — a beautiful legacy of unity and contribution that continues to this day ❤️.
Step inside, and you’ll also find a massive traditional bedok drum 🥁, once used to accompany the call to prayer — a powerful reminder of the mosque’s deep-rooted heritage 🕊️.
A quiet yet meaningful stop when you’re exploring Kuching’s historic India Street 🚶♀️🌇.
