Sarawak Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Len Talif Salleh, has proposed the development of scenic lay-bys along the elevated stretch of the Second Trunk Road (STR) passing through Sedilu National Park.
These lay-bys would allow motorists to safely stop and enjoy the breathtaking natural views—without disturbing wildlife or the fragile peat swamp ecosystem 🌳🦧. The initiative could also open up new opportunities for eco-tourism in the area.
💬 “I hope there will be designated lay-bys where people can pause and appreciate the beauty of the national park, especially along that stretch,” he said, adding that the implementation will depend on the Public Works Department (JKR).
The elevated հատված through the park is expected to span approximately 800 metres, with JKR responsible for its maintenance and cleanliness.
🌱 Interestingly, about 11 years ago, the original alignment of the road was planned to cut პირდაპირ through Ulu Sebuyau National Park. However, due to environmental concerns, the plan was revised to an elevated highway to minimise ecological impact.
🦧 This area is especially significant as it is the only place in Sarawak where orangutans are found living in peat swamp forests—making conservation efforts even more critical.
Len Talif also stressed the importance of public awareness:
🗑️ Proper waste disposal facilities must be provided along the highway
🌍 The public should be educated to avoid littering and protect sensitive ecosystems
🚧 The STR will connect major routes from the Lanang Bridge to the Pan Borneo Highway, extending through key areas such as Roban, Krian Bridge, Batang Saribas 2 Bridge, and the Batang Lupar Bridge (expected to be completed in June), before continuing towards Samarahan.
Once completed, the STR will complement existing highways and significantly improve connectivity across Sarawak—while balancing development with environmental preservation.
