📽️✨ A Glimpse into Kuching’s Past: Rex Cinema
Once standing proudly between Wayang Street and Temple Street, Rex Cinema was one of Kuching’s most iconic Art Deco landmarks. Officially opened in 1951, it wasn’t just a place to watch movies — it was a symbol of modern entertainment in its time.

Back then, it was reported in the Borneo News (1951) that Kuching would soon welcome “one of the most modern theatres,” owned and managed by the renowned Shaw Brothers of Singapore. Built on a unique triangular plot of land, Rex Cinema quickly became a familiar and beloved spot for locals.

However, time moved on. In 1994, Rex Cinema was demolished, making way for what we now know as Medan Pelita — a multi-storey complex that once featured a cineplex and parking facilities.
Though the building is gone, the memories remain. For many, Rex Cinema was more than just a cinema — it was part of growing up, weekend outings, and shared moments with family and friends. 🎞️
