Six traditional jars — carefully preserved and passed down through six generations — are among the remarkable heritage items recently donated to the Sarawak Museum Department.
According to Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the department’s dedication to protecting our cultural heritage has inspired tremendous public support. In the first quarter of this year alone, 11 significant donations were received.
Among the most treasured: six heirloom jars donated by Maney Nyiggang from Lepong Empeliau, Sri Aman.
Other notable donations include:
🏺 A sawfish rostrum (over 50 years old!) contributed by Chyr Ye Hong from Kuching, originally from Tatau, Bintulu — a fascinating glimpse into northern Sarawak’s biodiversity.
📖 An old copy of the Mushaf al-Maliki Qur'an donated by Abang Abdul Karim Abang Yak, with a handwritten note showing it was purchased in Kabong on 9 Feb 1942.
📜 Historical documents from Ko Tee Hock @ Joseph Ko, including a 1937 passport and identity certificates from 1939 and 1940.
The department is also hard at work preserving historic sites like Makam Sultan Tengah, Lumbong Rentap, and Makam Pengiran Matussin.
In digital preservation, 621 old maps have been successfully digitised this year — part of ongoing national efforts to safeguard our heritage.
Beyond preservation, research continues on both tangible and intangible heritage, including:
🎋 Chinese cultural heritage in Bau
🌿 Natural history in Sarawak
🎵 The Bidayuh traditional musical instrument Praktuong
👶 The Orang Ulu child naming ceremony
Archaeological field surveys are also active at sites like Bukit Serapah, Gua Sireh, Gua Chupak, and more — to reassess site conditions and strengthen evidence-based research.
