🏛️ Kuching’s old shophouses and historic buildings may soon get stronger protection ❤️
Some of Kuching’s most familiar old streets and heritage buildings could be getting greater protection as Sarawak works on new laws to conserve its heritage areas.The plan includes privately owned old shophouses, government buildings and historic monuments — especially around 📍Gambier Street, Main Bazaar and India Street.
Some of the landmarks mentioned include:
✨ Old Courthouse
✨ Round Tower
✨ Square Tower
✨ India Mosque (Masjid India)
The idea is to officially identify and zone buildings that should be preserved, so they won’t simply be replaced by modern developments in the future.
And with Kuching’s ART system also being developed, heritage conservation will be something that needs to be carefully considered. The state government said discussions with building owners and people on the ground will be important before any new legislation is introduced.
In other words, Kuching’s development doesn’t necessarily have to mean saying goodbye to its old buildings. 🥹
If the conservation efforts move forward, Kuching could even look towards pursuing UNESCO World Heritage Site recognition in the future. 🌏
For a city with so much history, hopefully more of these old buildings can continue to tell their stories for generations to come. ❤️
