Did you know Sarawak’s Kuching Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project is helping shape similar transport systems overseas? 🇲🇾✨
China-based rail transit manufacturer CRRC is using the Kuching ART project’s technical specifications and implementation experience as a reference for international projects, including Hong Kong’s proposed Kai Tak Smart and Green Mass Transit System.
During a recent meeting with Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, CRRC representatives highlighted how the Kuching project has helped inform their proposed ART solution for Hong Kong.
🌍 CRRC’s ART technology is also expanding globally, with vehicles deployed in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and planned trials in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ljubljana, Slovenia. The company is also exploring markets in Brazil and Argentina.
Meanwhile, there is progress on the Kuching ART vehicles! 🚆
✅ Required type tests in Chongqing, China, have been completed successfully, covering braking performance and other technical and safety requirements.
✅ The third and fourth vehicles are expected to undergo pre-delivery inspections in December.
✅ The project team is targeting a total of six vehicles by the end of 2026, including the two already delivered to Sarawak.
Preparations are also underway for the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly programme in Kuching, which could bring opportunities for technology transfer, local skills development and greater participation by Sarawakian industries.
With the ART project aimed at easing traffic congestion, reducing carbon emissions and improving public transport, could Kuching be on its way to becoming a regional hub for ART vehicle assembly? 👀
